Alan Pruce
Charleston City Manager
A lifelong chess enthusiast with a background in finance, Alan sees chess as a metaphor for life- where every decision matters, setbacks are part of the journey, and long-term thinking leads to meaningful success. Alan is passionate about creating opportunities for young people through chess, drawing on past experience as a scholastic coach to help shape programs that inspire growth and connection. He believes the game is uniquely powerful for kids of all ages, helping them sharpen focus, build confidence, and develop resilience. As a universal language that bridges cultures, generations, and backgrounds, chess gives every child a place to grow, connect, and thrive.
His commitment to scholastic chess is also personal- both of his sons are active scholastic players who regularly compete in SCISA state chess tournaments. (youngest son Josh took 1st place at the Spring tournament!)
He now serves as City Manager for Charleston, leading the expansion of scholastic chess through after-school programs, tournaments, and camps in the Charleston area.
